D.C. United U-16’s impress at Development Academy Winter Showcase

 D.C. United’s U-16 and U-18 Academy sides completed their run in the 2010 U.S. Soccer Development Academy Winter Showcase today in Phoenix, Arizona. The U-16’s posted an impressive 3-0-0 record, scoring eight goals in those contests and conceding three. United’s U-18 side went 0-1-2 in three closely contested matches.


On Friday, December 3, both sides faced the Colorado Rush, as Collin Martin scored a brace and Yaw Amankwa added a third goal for the U-16’s. On the other side, the U-18’s lost a hard-fought 1-0 match. On December 4, the Black-and-Red squared off against Indiana United. Once more, the U-16’s made quick work of the opposition, with Amankwa assisting on a Dylan Regan goal and Ohjay Porteria adding the second strike. The U-18’s drew 1-1 against their Midwestern counterparts, as Ryan Harmouche got on the score sheet.

Finally, both teams rounded out the Showcase action today against FC Milwaukee. The U-16’s scored three times in a 3-1 triumph. Michael Russo assisted on Porteria’s opening goal, and the midfielder provided the final pass on Amankwa’s tally. Joel Condor scored the third and final goal from a Martin Lopez assist. Patrick Etoughe scored the lone goal for United’s U-18’s in a 3-1 loss to finish off the tournament.

In mid-December, D.C. United’s Academy faces some of the biggest names in world football at the 2010 Future Champions Tournament in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. A Black-and-Red U-17 side will compete against youth teams from FC Barcelona, Everton, Paris Saint-Germain, Club America, Cruzeiro, and others. This unique tournament will take place from December 12 through December 19. Recently, the competiton groups were announced, with United set to play in Group D alongside Paris Saint-Germain and Brazil’s Vasco da Gama.
